Beating the cold: how to wear layers and look great doing it

The winter season is upon us, which means only one thing: layering is back! But, layering is an art that not everyone is comfortable with. That’s why we put together this simple style guide with simple tips on how to layer like a boss this winter.

Simplicity is key

The secret to wearing layers like a boss lies in keeping things simple. The last thing you want to do is try to model your look after an Instagram post of some style influencer.

Remember, most of the outfits you see on social media are overdone, and meant to serve as inspiration. You don’t have to emulate it exactly as it is.
All you need are a few layers to give your look a bit of dimension. For example, you could layer a jean shirt with a knit sweater and a leather jacket. That’s three layers and it’s enough to create a killer look.

Thin layers first

Start with a thin layer first and then add thick layers on top. That way, you won’t run into any problems with fit and comfort. It will also be easier for you to move around even though you’ve layered different types of clothing.
It’s important to note that there’s a practical purpose behind layering in this way as well. Layering thin layers against your skin allows for ventilation, while the thick layers on top insulate you against the cold. This makes it possible for you to keep warm without getting too hot.

Opt for quality over quantity

Each layer should be made from good quality material so that you don’t end up with stuff that sticks out or crinkles up your look.

Wear complimentary colors

If you’re terrible with matching colors then you should try using a color wheel to figure out which colors go together. Colors that work well with each other are usually placed next to one another.
Whatever you do, don’t combine colors that are at opposite sides of the color wheel. That will cause an unsightly look and will be too jarring.

Be mindful with patterns

Like colors, patterns should always be complementary. For best results, avoid wearing materials that have the same weave.

For example, if you’re going to wear a striped shirt then it’s best to opt for a simple non-patterned sweater or a jacket whose stripes are very different in size and arrangement. Also, never go for more than one or two patterns per outfit. Anything more than that is overkill.

Tuck in your shirt

If you want to look neat and stylish while wearing layers, make sure to tuck in your shirt and any other underlayers. You can leave the knit jersey or sweater untucked, but anything underneath that should be tucked all the way in.
The only exception to this rule is if you’re going for a streetwear look. Streetwear usually allows for a bit of underlayer visibility. However, this should only be attempted if this is the style you are going for.

Accessorize

Adding accessories to your look is like incorporating another dimension to it. For example, you could add a pop of color to a drab shirt with a colorful necktie or a stylish watch.
For maximum impact, make sure that your layers are made up of different proportions. That way, the eye is able to appreciate a little bit of each layer.
